Good evening, Madam Chair and Councilor. Um, thank you for having us before you tonight. I am thrilled to present Mr. Baron for consideration to join our planning board. Um, Mr. Baron, like some of the new appointees you'll hear from tonight actually proactively sought, um, this appointment after we had done some outreach through various communication channels to let folks know of some opportunities to serve on boards and commissions. So thank you for taking, um, the initiative. He, like some of our other appointees tonight is a relatively new member of our community
▶ 3:52 Jen Grigoraitis: and I'm thrilled to see people so willing to donate their time to our city. Um, he brings a rich background, um, in engineering, has worked in both the public and private sector and had the experience of serving on a planning board in Texas, which is a little bit different than serving on a planning board in suburban Boston. Um, and I think really can speak to sort of some of the things that he learned from that experience and some of the things he really values about Melrose and wants to see us continue to maintain in the community. So I'm thrilled that his willingness to step up. I think he'll bring a really welcome perspective to the board as they continue to, you know, balance our needs to increase housing with kind

Uh, thank you for having me. Um, I appreciate the opportunity to speak before you all. Um, I just, I think that my experience and my education working, I've worked as an engineer for eight years now. I started in site and land development down in Texas. I now work up here doing transportation drainage for public private clients. Um, I think based on previous meetings with the mayor as well as the planning department, I think my ideas for development align with the direction that the city is going. So I think I can be an asset to the planning board

Just Wanna say thank you and, um, your resume is great and being a civil engineer and having experience is a perfect fit for the planning board. So thank you. Um, I also wanted to say thank you in my time as a city counselor, I've spent a lot of time with the planning board, um, and really appreciate that expertise, um, that you have and that you'll be bringing, especially given the engineering background and drainage. Thank You Madam Chair. Can we come have a seat? Thank you. Um, so I think some of you already have the pleasure of knowing Lindsay. She's a Melrose resident. She and her family are heavily involved in many community activities. Um, she's involved with our Montessori school. She's been a small business owner. She does a variety of charitable activities and she was actively recruited to the BB estate by the fellow board members. I don't know what could speak more highly than having other
▶ 7:24 Jen Grigoraitis: people force you into volunteering. Um, so I think she brings a passion for this community and trying to, um, make everything more vibrant and exciting and inclusive. And I think she brings substantial business knowledge, um, which as the BB estate is a rental facility, is really important. And I'm just thrilled that her willingness to step up and that you were successfully recruited. It's too late now. Wonderful. Um, would you like to say a few words as well, Ms. Chisholm? I think it's a great honor actually to be, um, to be actually somewhat recruited, I guess you could say, um, by my fellow, um, trustees in which, um, it was, it is a great honor to be able to, um, sit with many other people that have such experience in that,

And, um, the BB estate is something somewhat of a institution of its own in which it is really important to preserve these, um, historical places. Um, which I think it, 'cause it's such a beautiful space inside that I did not realize that we could have more events inside and have it be more of a viable attraction because it is such a beautiful estate that, um, that was something that, um, my f at the first meeting, I didn't realize that that was something that we could do. So I think that that would be such a great option, say at Christmas time and stuff like that. 'cause it's such a pretty estate Yeah. And lit up and stuff like that. And then now that the police station is gonna be right next

So she had actually reached out some time ago with an interest in serving and has very patiently been waiting as we navigated, um, going through various requests for appointments. So this is to serve on the historical commission, which interestingly has been a very popular, um, request recently. Um, she brings a substantial background in adult learning, which I think as we talk about how do we get folks to engage

He was also, he's relatively new to Melrose and also, um, submitted his application in response to our request. Um, he is like a little literal, um, rocket scientist. He holds a PhD in Aeronautics and Astronautics. Um, and, um, has a background in academia as a lecturer and a research assistant. And also spoke in his letter of interest about, you know, recently purchasing a historic home in Melrose and sort of the care and research he did around trying to restore parts of that home and wanting to bring that, um, interest and knowledge to the broader community. Um, I'm thrilled to have Elizabeth here as a for consideration for the Human Rights Commission. She, um, is an attorney by training, which actually is one of the requirements of our Human Rights Commission ordinance. So we're thrilled to have a lawyer who's willing to step up. Um, you don't have to provide legal advice, don't worry. Um, but just to provide that lens. Um, and the commission, you know, has recently we've had some significant vacancies and we are, um, getting close to being full capacity. There's a new chair. I think there's a real reinvigoration, you know, partially from what's happening at a national
▶ 13:42 Elizabeth Kowal: level, um, in the work of that commission. So I'm thrilled that Elizabeth is stepping up. Um, she's been serving on our Public Safety Building Committee, so she has seen what it's like to be involved in government and still decided to come back for more. Um, so I am really pleased that she's willing to serve in this capacity. Thank you. Thank you. Um, Ms. Cowell, is there anything you'd like to add? Um, sure. I have, uh, really, even though it hasn't always been easy, I've really enjoyed serving on, um, the public safety committee. And I spoke with the mayor and Denise about getting more involved. Um, I come from a background where, um, I was raised at either everybody counts or nobody counts.
▶ 14:18 Robb Stewart: So, um, I've been looking for ways to get more involved, um, particularly with the political climate. I don't wanna make this political, um, but, um, just small ways that I can step up and help and lend my voice. And so this is where I wanted to start with the town that I love. So thank you. Madam Chair, I just wanted to mention that I've had the pleasure of working with Ms. Cole Kowell on the BB School, uh, transition to the police department. And she's been, um, uh, very much an advocate for doing the right thing for the neighborhood, as well as being considerate professional and, um, I think holds a strong acumen for all that's required.

Um, this marks at least a first for me in my tenure as mayor, where we have the next two appointments are, um, members of the same household and they both volunteered. So thank you, um, for different, I noticed the addresses. Yep. Yep. So thank you for that. So, um, again, Ryan is relatively new to Melrose. He reached out and volunteered. He's interested in serving on the Historic District Commission, which is the commission that oversees, um, some of the signage and outside regulation for all of of the buildings,
▶ 17:49 Jen Grigoraitis: which within our historic district, which includes most of Main Street, but also City Hall and Central Fire, which will obviously become an important, um, part going forward as we work on that building project. Um, he is involved in environmental advocacy, which I think is a really important lens as we think about some of the work around historic preservation, about how do we maintain what we have while also making sure that it's, you know, fit for the 21st century. Um, so I am grateful that he was willing to step up and I put him for your consideration. Thank you, Madam Mayor. Um, Mr. Murphy, is there anything you'd like to add? Thank you. Just that, um, uh, as the mayor mentioned, we recently moved to Melrose.
▶ 18:29 Uh, we, uh, main Street and the Historic District was one of the things that drew us to Melrose. And we love being able to walk, uh, from our home downtown. Um, and I have just been looking for a way to get more involved in the community. Um, and hopefully my background in law will allow me to help, uh, make the right decisions, uh, and, you know, move things forward while preserving the history of, of Melrose as well. Thank you. Madam Mayor, the, The other half of the Florence Street Duo. Um, and, um, Taylor is interested in serving on the Women's Commission. She is a practicing attorney. She has worked both on the, um, prosecutorial side and now is in private practice. And in both those roles, she's represented, um, victims of violence, which, as you all know from your recent resolution regarding sexual Assault Awareness Month disproportionately impacts women and girls.
▶ 20:42 Um, so I am excited about our shared professional background, but also think she, she brings, um, a really important expertise for the, to the commission as they think about how best to support the women and girls of Melrose.
