▶ 2:16 you to incorporate gender identity and gender expression into the municipal non-discrimination code transphobia like homophobia anti-semitism racism sexism is a pernicious form of bigotry in our society while fortunately i'm not aware of any incidents of this nature in our city it is something that occurs across our country and the board of aldermen passing this measure tonight would send a statement to the rest of the commonwealth and the rest of the country that melrose is a welcoming community and that this form of bigotry isn't tolerated here i think it would send a positive statement especially to our young people in the school community where this issue is even more deeply felt and understood as a real part of the their social

They're right over there at Memorial Hall. But I would say not to let it get to your head since as we all know you're back again next year for Presidency again. But a resolution honoring the President of the Marrow's Bird of Aldermen for the year 2014. Offered by myself and signed by every member of the Bird of Aldermen. I can just take out my reading glasses for a second. Whereas, Alderman Donald L. Kahn Jr. has served as President of the Bird of Aldermen for the City of Melrose for the year 2014. His sixth term in that dignified position. And whereas the board congratulates his president, Donald Kahn, for completing his seventh term as Alderman at large in the great city of Melrose.

Whereas the board recognizes that President Kahn's dedication to our community extends far beyond his efforts in this chamber. In particular, his 20 years of service to our city as alderman and city solicitor. And whereas President Kahn leads by example, whether it be by thoroughly investigating the issues at hand for our meetings, leading a healthy lifestyle by running almost daily, and a loving and caring husband to April or as a loving father who is of constant support to his twins Donald and Emily and whereas the board shows its appreciation for President Kahn's extensive legal knowledge and colorful

I just wanted to point out that I had had some questions at the Legal and Legislative committee that were addressed to our city solicitor, Robert Van Campen.

Medeiros: He has responded, and there is a memo that's been in IQM 2 for some time, but there was also some further clarification that he had sent via email, and that has been added to IQM 2, but it was recent. In particular, my question was for clarification about whether this proposed amendment would make any additional changes uh or is just consistent with the state law that has been that's existing and he um responds to alderman wright the chairman of legal and legislative frank i am attaching correspondence in an effort to clarify alderman Medeiros question to alderman Bird proposed amendment to section 15-50 of the code of ordinances in an effort to further clarify the contents of my letter please be aware that the amendments proposed by alderman bird are intended

Medeiros: to reflect those changes which the legislature has made to a number of existing statutes in the area of gender identity and ensure that the policy statement of the human rights commission is consistent with what the legislature has previously passed have a good weekend rob i just want to point out that that's there i also just wanted to take a moment to say that as we consider this this, we are not just looking to add some new areas to protect, but also to reaffirm those that we already protect. And I just want to point out that this bit says in our code, and the proposed changes will read, this policy shall ensure equal opportunity to each person regardless of race, religious creed, national origin, sex, age, ancestry, sexual orientation, gender identity,

Medeiros: gender expression, marital, family, or military status, source of income or disability, where unlawful discrimination exists in housing, employment, education, public accommodations, city services, insurance, banking, credit, and health care. And I just want to point out that these are all here and are equal in nature and that they all, and I'm sure we all agree, deserve to be upheld and protected, recognizing that there are some instances where, for instance, perhaps people who feel they need protection under say gender identity or gender expression some things may be in conflict with beliefs expressed through religious Creed and I just hope that we all feel free and everyone feels free to
