▶ 5:01 Paul Brodeur: forward to a productive year and given the events of the last few days i want to say that i very much value the relationship and the spirit with which uh each of us approaches the job and i think that is to uh to the credit of the city um for the for the purposes tonight order i want to offer in nomination, Richard Curl. As you can see from his background, his literal background that you're viewing right now, he is an accomplished architect, and his resume, quite frankly, speaks for itself. He has a long career. His credentials are impeccable, but in terms of this particular role, folks should understand that he lives on Myrtle Street, right outside the boundary of our historic district uh he practices within the district he's going to
▶ 5:57 Paul Brodeur: be replacing commission member uh robin peavy of buccaloosa resigned effective uh in december and mr curl should you approve this nomination would serve the role outlined in the administrative code which calls for the hdc to include among its members one or more residents or owners of of property or renters within the historic district. As I said before, his skills as an architect and his interest in design that is reflective of our community's rich cultural heritage and certainly his commitment to the community as a 22 year resident, make him an ideal candidate for the position. Mr. Curl, I think we'll be happy to answer any questions or concerns that you might want to raise with them. Thank you for your consideration.

I think actually a mayor kind of hit all my points more than 20 years in Melrose. I live near the historic district. I work in it. Part of the reason I worked in it is because it's a great place and I'd really love to join the historic district commission to help keep it that way. thank you is there any question from our fellow counselors uh councilor Stewart thank you madam chair uh mr carl thank you for joining us and uh mr mayor thank you for those uh uh very welcoming words to uh our guests this evening uh mr carl i'm i'm interested there's there's been a lot of
▶ 7:46 Robb Stewart: debate recently around balancing the historical area of Melrose with the advancement and development of the town in in terms of you know bringing in or modernizing some of the areas with the consideration that we need to keep that historic uh flair and uh perspective can you share a few thoughts on on how you would uh proceed on the historical commission uh with some of those um i think interesting discussions that will be coming up in the potential future Sure. Well, you know, obviously, there's a lot of great existing built environment on this couple of blocks, and I certainly wouldn't want to lose any of what we have right now. That said, I think development's important and I think quality is really the most important feature of whatever the development's going to be. A thoughtful design
▶ 9:01 doesn't necessarily have to be slavishly historical or something that's historical doesn't need to stay a thousand percent the way it is. As you know, Melrose prides itself on its ability to serve its senior population and, in particular, to make sure that they have opportunities to stay independent within the community. That has been a particular challenge for communities across the Commonwealth for obvious reasons over the last 8 or 10 or 12 months. And what we rely on, as a lot of COAs do throughout Massachusetts. We rely on our volunteer base and folks with knowledge and the desire to help to step forward. And I can tell you, Ms. Fernandez came recommended by Joan Cassidy, who was a longtime supporter of just about all things Melrosean, but in particular, the Friends of the Council on Aging. Ms. Fernandez got involved, has been to one or two of the COA

Her financial background, I think, will be of particular help and interest to the members of the Council as we move forward to try to both maintain those base level of services and make sure we continue to meet the really diverse needs of our senior population.
