Joining me are voting members Councilor McMaster, Councilor McNaught, Councilor Migliorelli, and President Garibaitis, and non-voting members Councilor Tramontozzi and Councilor Cinella. Pursuant to Governor Baker's March 12, 2020 order suspending certain provisions of the open meeting law and the governor's March 15, 2020 order imposing strict limitation on the number of people that may gather in one place, this meeting of the Health, Education, and Welfare Committee will be conducted via remote participation to the greatest extent possible. Thank you very much for the opportunity to address you again tonight about the Human Rights Commission. There has been, as many of you have served on this commission, I don't really need to give you a long history of what that service involves or what really tremendous progress that the commission has made over the years. It is one of our longest standing, perhaps the longest standing commission, with the exception maybe of the Park Commission in
▶ 3:46 Paul Brodeur: the city um and it has evolved and grown over the years and i am uh i'm delighted to offer bonnie's name as a new as a new commissioner um there's something there's always something there's we unfortunately sometimes fall into the bucket of there's two kinds of people the lifers and the new melroseans and um i think that is something of a myth and the two candidates you'll see before you one one grew up here but miss clapp um chose milrose and and um and fell in love with the community rather than rather than drag that on i think you'd much rather hear from mike and her than hear more from me again i thank you very much for your for your quick duration back here on mute yeah mr sankovic please call me mike yeah um thank you um um bonnie
▶ 4:51 has come to um several human rights commission meetings and um she's a well-respected member of the community um i note that she um participated in our most recent meeting which was virtual and um offered up a whole bunch of ideas for the pride event i feel like bonnie's reputation and work ethic around the town speaks for itself she's a member of the winthrop pto um is um an avid participant in many community activities throughout melrose and i think she'll be a welcome addition to the human rights commission fantastic um i think we can take these orders in the way that they've come in so miss clap you can to speak thank you um my desire to work with the human rights commission really is quite simple i just really wanted to give back to this amazing
▶ 5:47 community that's really become our home we moved here back in 2012 from edmonton alberta canada with the intention of actually only staying a few years and now in 2020 three kids later we are really proud that nowhere else feels more like home than Melrose and we just I would really like for all people here in Melrose to experience the same welcome that we have we just want everyone to be able to find a piece of their home here and I want to honor the uniqueness of all individuals here and I also want to give back further to my children by modeling all that to them as well so it'd really be a privilege to volunteer with human rights commission and to work with so many esteemed people that are already working with it your greatest thank you thank you
▶ 6:45 Jen Grigoraitis: mr mayor and chairman stankovich and thank you ms clapp for being here i am so excited to have your name before us as your ward Councilor it warms my heart to see you giving back to your community in yet another way i've known you for years i've had the opportunity to work with you you when you served as co-president of the Winthrop PTO. I know that you approach everything you do with the issues of inclusivity and diversity at the forefront. And I look forward to seeing your work with the commission. So I wholeheartedly support this nomination and thank you for your service. Thank you so much. Councilor McNaught. I'll be very brief. I just wanted to say that I applaud your nomination and I loved your son's quote that said,
▶ 7:31 Leila Migliorelli: home is not where you're from it's where you belong so thank you that was very cute thank you um i just wanted to also extend my um warm congratulations um bonnie i think that you know you as everyone's mentioned you've been such a leader in our community and given back so much i know that you felt really passionate about the issues of human rights um you know being a former commissioner myself and um you know we had had some conversations and so i'm glad to see that you taking this next step and hope you'll get a lot of as much out of the Commission as I did thank you so much I'll make a motion to recommend for passage second a motion to recommend for passage by president seconded by Councilor Migliorelli

The second item on our agenda is order 2020-100 appointment of Elizabeth Ticcioni, 14 Irving Street to the Human Rights Commission to fill the unexpired term of Lila Migliorelli said to expire on the last day of February 2021. um mike would you like to speak briefly um first i'd like to everyone know that i actually wore a tie to the other past time and i didn't think i was gonna be on video this time but um no um with respect to liz um liz is um liz you know the best compliment i can say liz is that she reminds me of a lot of myself she's extremely detail oriented um she accomplishes tasks and
▶ 9:21 Paul Brodeur: cross it off her to-do list um she has a bigger heart than i do um she is genuine and caring and um i could not think of a more appropriate person to better serve melrose on human rights commission would you like to say a few words sure mike thank you so much what about me finish strong don't finish with me you gotta finish strong um as i talked about you know the that false dichotomy that we sometimes hear Melrose Liz is more on the wifers side of things but as a like Bonnie has an aptitude and appreciation particularly for the needs of diversity inclusion in our education system and as a background that really dovetails with that incredibly well and I will said just because pride was the pride week was mentioned this is not directly
▶ 10:23 relevant to Liz but I've heard a little bit about what the what the HRC is planning and if they can pull off even half of it it is gonna knock our socks off so very much looking forward to that and looking forward to Liz being a part of that event and part of everything about the HRC going forward thank you for stepping forward if you'd like to say a few words as well sure Thank You Mr. Mayor and thank you Mike. I grew up as Mr. Mayor mentioned I grew up here in Melrose. My parents live just across town a mile and a half away from us and my brother and his family live up in Beverly. When my husband and I were looking for homes we you know had cast our net and nothing felt like home more than Melrose in particular our specific home one of the things so we have two
▶ 11:27 children our son is in second grade and our daughters in kindergarten up at Hoover and one of the things that I've really been reflecting on as a mother difference my childhood neighborhood made in my life our neighborhood It's phenomenally close. I grew up with all of our neighborhood parents as essentially aunts and uncles. I was texting with one of my neighborhood moms. It was my mom's age just this morning. And no matter where I was at any point in my life, I always knew that I belonged in my neighborhood. and I've taken for granted I think for most of my life how important that has been to me and how much that has shaped my life and as a mom now I'm realizing how important it is for children to feel that way to feel like they belong in
▶ 12:27 their neighborhood and like they belong in their community and I feel such a deep calling to serve children but to serve our community and and to make sure that that my experience feeling that sense of belonging is not a unique experience in our city and that everyone who lives here in Melrose is able to feel that they belong and that they're important and that they're respected and cared for when the vacancies were announced on the Human Rights Commission it just feels like a good time for me to step out and and volunteer my are both of our children are now in school and I I had taught kindergarten up until my son was born or who's our older child so I've been at home with the kids now for eight years and I'm looking looking at ways that I

Thank you Liz. I'm excited about your nomination as well and for filling my slot in the Commission. I know one of the things I thought about when I was running for office was you know obviously the impact of my family but second of all was the impact on the Commission. I you know enjoyed my time there and I hope you'll get the same out of it and I know that you you know I volunteered alongside you. You helped a lot of a lot of our events and everything Mike had to say is true. You know your attention to detail and commitment just as a volunteer helping
