Medeiros: educational programs and personnel it's elizabeth de selm finance and facilities jen mcandrew policy and planning margaret driscoll and as the board of aldermen has a liaison so does the school committee to our board and that's margaret driscoll who's also the vice chair their last meeting they had a very detailed presentation on personalized learning but the big issue for the meeting was of course the budget for fy20 mayor inferno was unable to attend and so due to illness and so therefore she had the city solicitor deliver a budget message from her she conveyed that her budget she will provide the school committee or anticipates providing the school committee with a two percent increase over their budget from last year and in order to

Medeiros: do that she's anticipating a reduction to the non-school department budget the city side of the budget of six hundred thousand dollars superintendent taymor also presented her budget message and as you know she is planning to present two budgets one assuming the override passes that's coming up on april 2nd and the other one is assuming that it does not in both cases superintendent tamil will be proposing these budgets with more than one million dollar with more than one million dollar decrease in the applied funds from the school revolving accounts and the details of which are not yet available but the next meeting january 29th which was just about a week from today the school committee will have its first

Medeiros: meeting and really get a look at the budgets so i think the public might be interested to know where they can get more information about the school and just like our meetings obviously you can come welcome to be here also on mmtv you can watch at home on the mmtv website mmtv3.org and of course on our website the city of melrose.org website under meeting agenda portal you can see all the different meetings including the school committee agendas and supplemental materials including the superintendent's budget message which is seven pages long and has lots of detail and of course the school website melrose schools.com last but not least i wanted to mention we have with us in the chamber it's a kindergarten art installation every kindergartner

Medeiros: in the school district read a book called the dot which focuses on the theme of schools sorry of circles symbolizing unity and so this it's a very beautiful mural that's here on display every kindergartner in the district created a circle and created into one piece of artwork so we're very lucky to have it here and the theme is unity and community and I thought that's It's a great way for us to start off the year. Thank you, Madam President. With a point of personal privilege here at this moment, I wanted to make a brief statement

Zwirko: and then I'm hopeful that I can suspend the rules and my colleagues can join me that on November 1st of 2005, the UN General Assembly designated January 27th as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The day marks the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp and is meant to honor the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and the millions other victims of Nazism. We stand, I request that we would stand together today to honor those who were murdered and remind each other what happens when we turn a blind eye to racism, bigotry, anti-Semitism, and persecution. With that being said, we don't meet again until after January 27th, So I'm using this meeting this evening to request that we suspend the rules so we may all gather around the rostrum and take a picture with this sign that says, We Remember.
