Mortimer: appointment to the commission on women rilda cassell um miss williams will you come up and join us as well why don't you sit with uh your candidate here this is lata williams uh also long-term member you're the chair presently yes still presently the chair of the uh commission on women and the candidate here rilda cassell is before us um we have all i'm sure i haven't i'll speak for the others if i may reviewed your resume it's quite impressive um welcome to melrose how long have you lived here now three years yes three years right um so would you like to make an opening statement or ms williams would you like to make an opening statement before we proceed to to the colloquy sure I just I'm happy to introduce you to Rilda Cassell and
▶ 3:18 welcome her to hopefully joining the Commission on women I was very impressed with her credentials and I'm happy to present her tonight you've seen by my resume I work at the Harvard Graduate School of Education as an academic advisor or I'm active in issues related to diversity equity and inclusion and I've been active on the committee on concerns of women at Harvard I'm also a parent my son is a kindergartner at Lincoln School and my daughter is in preschool at time time preschool about to be teachable moments and I'm particularly interested in equity regarding pay issues and I'm interested in challenges facing caregiving I have young children and my mom also has Alzheimer's so I'm facing both ends of the spectrum in terms of caregiving and

Lemmerman: know traditionally a lot of that falls on women so that's a concern of mine as well thank you very much miss cassell any alderman wishing to ask questions or make comments at this time alderman Lemmerman please thank you mr chairman i just wanted to take the opportunity to thank you for coming down and not only introducing yourself to us but for stepping forward to serve the city in this capacity i know that you have been volunteering your time as a as a non-member and engaging with the Commission I've seen the results of some of your work and your ideas and I think that's been a good contribution and I'm excited to see you do it in a in a more formal capacity so thank you thank you Thank You Alderman Lemmerman are there any other Alderman wishing to be heard

Mortimer: cassell the next order we have before us is order 2018-159 it is the appointment of christian bunce de philippe 22 lindfels parkway to the melrose commission on women for a three-year term said term to expire on the last day of february 2021. welcome mr phillip nice to see you good evening thank you for having me would you like to make a statement before we proceed with the colloquy sure thank you so i am a happy resident of melrose for the past seven years my husband and i came here when we were brand new newlyweds and we've really made our home here i'm very eager for the opportunity to serve this community. I work in the city as a business litigator, so not always the most touchy-feely or always service-oriented of jobs, but I've been very
▶ 6:34 happy to serve on my firm's committees relating to diversity and inclusion as well. I'm soon to be announced as the chair of our Women's Forum, so it follows that I have a strong interest in the economic and professional advancement of women I'm also interested in caregiving issues I'm also a mother of two boys one of whom the oldest of whom is going to start in the public schools next year and I think mentorship and service is very important and I'm hopeful to be able to bring some of the ideas from the private sector that I have to Melrose I am also very interested and invested in increasing and improving the dialogue around gender equality in our community and working on issues relating to toxic masculinity as

Lemmerman: a parent of two boys and and just overall improving gender equality so I welcome the opportunity thank you very much well said all the men love woman please on discussion Thank You mr. chairman again just really want to thank you for stepping forward and being willing to serve on this Commission I think your business background in particular is one that's somewhat unique and you could really offer some new ideas for some programming that could be really useful to women in this community so I'm excited to see that and again just grateful for your volunteering your time in this capacity so thank you very much thank you thank you alderman lemmerman alderman Mr. Tramontozzi, please. ▶ 8:13 John N. Tramontozzi: Thank you, Ms. DeFillippe, for coming forward and volunteering your time to serve on the committee. Very impressive resume, and I want to thank you for that. You mentioned about the service and mentorship that you've been involved in. I was looking at your resume, a very small, I'm directed to, and you're involved with Citizen Schools 8th grade academy writing coach. Can you tell me a little bit more about that? Yes, and that's a fairly aged reference on my resume. That's something I did as a very junior attorney. We volunteered with 8th grade students from the Boston public schools and worked on improving their writing skills, and that was also sort of a mentorship relationship. I had a student that I worked with for, I think, about two years named Yobo.
▶ 9:08 John N. Tramontozzi: He was interested in being an engineer, so I had my husband take him out for ice cream because he's an engineer. He knows a lot more about that than I do. But overall, it was a really great experience getting to know some kids. As well as Yobo, we worked with his whole class, and that was a volunteer program that was hosted at a law firm in the city. And I think that's wonderful and great, And I think the business community and residents can get more involved in those type of situations. I think there's a lot of people out there. And the reason I brought that up is because the school department here in Melrose, right now they're going through a budget process, and the school committee is debating their budget now.
▶ 9:51 John N. Tramontozzi: And will be soon presenting it to us. And I know, I certainly would like to see them look into those type of opportunities for people like in your position and others who might be willing to become coaches for the students because they do have opportunities for coaching jobs and where it can be volunteer jobs from many people in the community. I think that's the direction they should take a look at as they're discussing their budget. But thank you so much, I just wanted to put that out there so maybe somebody in the school department might hear that and look into it. Thank you, thank you Mr. Chairman.
