I'm chair of the committee, and we're joined tonight by Alderman Boisselle, Alderman Medeiros, President Conn, and non-voting members Alderman Forbes, Alderman Mortimer, and Alderman Zwirko. tonight's meeting is being recorded by MMTV it will be broadcast on the public access channel and also available online we have a motion to open the floor for public participation from Alderman Medeiros seconded by Alderman Boisselle all in favor aye any opposed the floor is now open for public participation if there's anyone in the chamber who is here to speak to any of the three items

▶ 1:45 a motion to spend the rules by alderman Medeiros seconded by alderman Boisselle all in favor aye any opposed the rules are suspended and i'd also like to note that we've been joined by alderman McAteer-Margolis is a member of the committee as well thank you very much thank you madam chair i apologize for my dress playoff baseball down the monk fourth inning running out of pictures uh i'd like to uh it's an honor for me to welcome back to the chamber uh doug mcdonald uh doug needs no introduction to the people in this room and i'm sure the people at home uh he is a 16-year member of the melrose board of aldermen serving as an alderman at large who's president of the board of alderman his past chairman and trustee of the melrose public library former chairperson
▶ 2:32 the melrose redevelopment authority twice president to the melrose chamber of commerce former trustee at the melrose wakefield hospital former board of directors member of the melrose credit union past chair of the salvation army the heart fund the cancer crusade and has made his mark in this community for many years before i introduce him i'd like to personally thank ralph for his 14 years of service to not only the Cemetery Commission but when I became mayor there was a group of people that stood up to work with the transition team of Mayor Lyons on a Mount Hood remediation to study the plans and the Ralph was one of the first people as a construction professional to step forward and serve on that group after he did that he decided to serve
▶ 3:18 the community as the chairman of the cemetery commission and he has done a tremendous tremendous job and I thank him for his service but but Doug like fellow members former chief of police Danny O'Neill and Mark Garapay whose father served 36 years before him on the cemetery trustees Doug will be an incredible member to be a caretaker for not only the sacred place but really a uh a history of our community and a place that we all take great pride in so i'd like to thank him for his service and i ask for your consideration of this nomination thank you mayor dolan uh mr mcdonald would you like to say a few words about yourself for the committee do i have anything to say tonight yes i'm just kind of like looking around there's some funny feelings going on in
▶ 4:05 my head as i sit down in this chamber i don't some of you i do know some i don't and i'm recognizing some pictures on the wall i appreciate your consideration tonight the mayor has asked me to go on this board with two good people danny o'neill and mark garapay and it's it's a pleasure to stay involved in the city i've always been involved here in the cemetery board i'm i'm actually looking forward to it and it's appropriate at my age of 75 i thought motion to recommend second the motion i recommend by alderman Passed seconded by alderman medeiros uh before we take a vote president khan yeah one thing that he he i noticed he didn't put in his resume that he was my next door neighbor for eight years i don't think that was one of the highlights of his uh service
▶ 4:56 to the city but um i i we do certainly appreciate uh president mcdonald for coming back and once again uh donating his time nice to be here with you tonight donnie donnie and i sir donnie used to live next door to me when i was an alderman at lodge he was an alderman at lodge and two houses up with joe casey and alderman at lodge so our streets are always very clean in the summer well plowed in the winter and we had a great time thanks donnie this is a great great appointment thank you thank you any other members of the committee Sorry about that, Alderman Mortimer. Thank you, Chairman Lemmerman, President Kahn is absolutely right. This is a great nomination, a wealth of experience as was laid out by Mayor Dolan.
▶ 5:49 Peter D. Mortimer: President McDonald is here, and we use the term like southern colonels. Once you're a president, you're called a president for life, just like a southern colonel would be. And if somebody wants to see an interesting picture, right there in the back right corner of this room as you turn around is a picture of Doug McDonald from about 40 years ago. That's a slight exaggeration, it wasn't 40, but close. And he looks good. And when Mr. McDonald and President Kahn and Joe Casey, all of them, that was right there in Ward 6. And in a little while, if you look at the left corner, we'll be saying the same thing about Mayor Dolan's picture up there on the left-hand corner while we're having a little fun here tonight.

▶ 7:19 so I would ask Ms. Harlow to please come forward, along with Mayor Dolan. good evening good evening another person that doesn't need any introduction Kathy Harlow used to attend every member of the Melrose School Committee before there was television that's right right she was a true civic watchdog for many years before she formalized her great experience to be on the lower substance abuse prevention coalition healthy families coalition team Melrose team wakefield he stonem for the hospital the women's health collaborative i could go on and on and on there isn't a single institution volunteer or otherwise that hasn't been touched by the good works of kathy harlow right now she is the program manager for the north suburban child
▶ 8:11 and family resource network that provides incredible incredible services for ray of array of melrose families as well as families in the region and it's certainly I'm very happy that she has accepted this appointment to serve on the Human Rights Commission and I asked for your consideration of this nomination motion to recommend second recommend by Alderman Medeiros seconded by Alderman Boyce L any discussion thank you and I and sorry I cut her off before she was ready to go it's not like could you say a few words about why you're interested in the appointment and what you hope to accomplish being a 29 year resident of Melrose this is my home as much as it's been my husband for most of his years and years ago when the League of Women Voters put together the Human
▶ 9:05 Mary Beth McAteer-Margolis: Rights Commission I used to do a lot of the work with them and it's always been one of the things that I've supported and I just feel at this point in my life working with the families that I do through the network it gives me an opportunity to come back and do some work for the city that I love thank you thank you thank you I don't know how you're gonna fit it in Kathy with everything else that you do but I know that you will and thank you very much I think you'll be an excellent Commissioner you're always very fair and open and non-judgmental and i i know you're going to bring a lot to that commission so thank you thank you you're here any other discussion on the order we have a motion to recommend

▶ 10:45 home. Congratulations is due because Juliana graduated last month from Northeastern University School of Law. Congratulations. She also is a graduate of Simmons College. She has worked in the office of Governor Patrick. She has worked in Veterans Affairs for Senator John Kerry. She has an incredible array of experience. She has been a law clerk. She has worked for the United States Attorney's Office, Civil Division, and she wishes to take all of this experience, including a stint at Fenway Park, which was exciting, this ray of experience and to contribute to a very active Human Rights Commission. I really want to thank her. She must be incredibly busy, and instead of relaxing and going out and doing what she

And Ms. Smith, would you like to add anything? Sure, thank you all for having me here. It is something I'm very excited in. I was looking for a way to get more involved in this community. I've really come to love Melrose since I moved here three years ago and saw the vacancy on the Human Rights Commission and it just seemed like the perfect way to get involved. It's so aligned with everything that, you know, all my experience thus far and I'm eager to work with the wonderful commissioners I've met thus far and participate
