January is recognized as National Mentoring Month. The Melrose Cares Community Mentoring Program is part of the Melrose Alliance Against Violence, and we'll meet to celebrate this year's mentors next Monday night, and we'll be here at meetings, I believe, next Monday night. They were unable to attend as a group, so I was hoping that I could have permission to come forward and read the resolution and we'll present it to them prior to their celebration on

Bird: honoring the Melrose Cares community mentoring program during January's national mentor recognition month whereas the Melrose Cares community mentoring program was launched in 2005 as part of the Melrose Alliance against violence Maeve's youth violence prevention initiative whereas the Melrose cares community mentoring program links volunteer adults with middle school students to provide ongoing guidance and support both in a group setting and on a one-to-one basis whereas mentoring has been shown to help with a range of issues including self-confidence and self-esteem school attendance aggressive behavior bullying or witnessing violence in the home whereas the purpose of these relationships is to support students in developing resiliency and making positive life choices whereas studies show that mentored students are 27% less likely to start using alcohol 53% less likely to skip school 27% less likely to skip a class almost 33% less likely to hit someone mentored students also report getting along better with their peers and with their parents whereas the Melrose Cares community mentoring program over the past nine years has served over 150 students matched with dedicated community volunteers be it resolved that we the members of the Board of Aldermen do hereby express our sincere appreciation to the dedicated volunteers and staff members of the Melrose Cares community mentoring program for their efforts on behalf of Melrose youth and proclaim January 2015 as mentor recognition month be it further resolved that on this fifth day of January in the year 2015 a copy of this resolution be spread upon the records of the Board of Aldermen and that a special copy be signed by each member of the board and presented to Allison Breyer Melrose Cares community mentoring program coordinator and Rebecca Mooney executive director of the Melrose Alliance Against Violence signed the members of the Board of Aldermen as well as our mayor Robert J Dolan thank Thank you all very much for your consideration.
