Our Chair Manisha Bewtra is unable to make it to tonight's meeting, so I am here in her place. We're calling, it is 7-16, we're calling to order the Finance Committee. Here present with us are also voting members scott korps and michael Zwirko also in attendance are non-voting members alderman robert Boisselle and president jennifer lemmerman this meeting is being recorded and will be rebroadcast on mmtv and available on mmtv3.com is there a motion motion over the floor for public participation second Alderman Zwirko opens the public participation second by Alderman Forbes all in favor

Medeiros: aye opposed the floor is now open for public participation the public may speak on any order that's before us tonight in the Finance Committee only that's just two items that are acceptance of grants seeing no members of the public willing to come forth on the orders before us this evening I move to close public comment. ▶ 1:59 rules thank you you have the floor oh thank you thank you madam chair just seeing that we have the acceptance of the school nursing grant before us as well as our health director I was just one I'd like to open the for any presentation or comments that you'd like to make at this time sure so this is a grant that we had talked about in the past it's a replacement of a grant that we used to have that was $3,000 a year this is a new grant that's $5,000 a year however we can't use it for the same things that we previously were able to use it for such as substitute nurses and supplies which is why when you did the budget there was that increase in those line items and we talked about that there was a grant this is the grant so it's from the state health department

Zwirko: through the school nursing unit it is to two basic things one is for some professional services for the school nurses and also to do some programming addressing health disparities so I just had one additional question for you and thank you for being here this evening the question that I have relates to the says that the funds for disparities and racial inequalities to help disparities and racial inequalities could you talk about some of the professional development that you may use with this grant sure the professional development we specifically discussed in the grant was actually for specifically for some diabetes updates the equipment that the students have constantly is changing and becomes more and more sophisticated including for some of our students with
▶ 3:55 diabetes who are as young as three years old we're obviously the nurse has a very active role with their diabetes management it's really important that the nurses have the opportunity to keep up with the technology so the professional specifically the professional development we're looking at is for for the diabetes but there could be some other opportunities too great thank you for that all the questions I have I just a quick follow up question is this a grant that will be renewed on an annual basis so let's go extend longer than the year it's actually a 10-year grant okay that we don't have to reapply for as long as the funding is reappropriated to the state Health Department very good thank you very much on that I make a motion to

Medeiros: recommend Alderman Forbes most recommend second any further discussion I just mentioned that there is no match no matching no all in favor aye opposed this order will be recommended of acceptance of the grant to our full board meeting at our next meeting in August the next order before us is order 2020-1 the first order of the fiscal year acceptance of two youth action team mini grants okay so I was hoping that one of our youth was going to be able to attend but do you want to take a quick look behind you to see if I did okay she's not here so so as you are aware because we've talked about this in the past part of what we do with our substance abuse prevention grant is we have a youth action team at the high school and actually also at the middle
▶ 5:34 school there's a statewide organization called the 84 which does a lot of advocacy and training of youth about nicotine and they have what they call mini grants they're $500 mini grants that the students can apply for and they complete a project and as long as they complete the project they're given the five hundred dollars and last fiscal year the youth did two different projects one was a survey at the high school about their use of flavored products not besides menthol mint and wintergreen but other flavored products and they did administer the survey and then the second project was doing social media things about vaping which we've talked about as being a big issue so they have received the two $500 checks we're asking for acceptance to receive
▶ 6:40 the fire to use the $500 checks the youth are allowed to decide what they want to spend the money on and they have decided they'd like to have both of the checks used towards the new service dog at the high school that's great motion recommend second Alderman Forbes moves to recommend seconded by Alderman Zwirko any further discussion and again I'll just point out these are also non-matching grant on matching all in favor aye opposed this order will to be recommended to our next full board meeting with the recommendation for passage thank you thank you motion to adjourn madam chair Alderman Forbes moves to adjourn second seconded by alderman's work oh all in favor all right we are adjourned thank you
