Lemmerman: and we have two orders still remaining in front of us, and we've been joined by the appropriate city official that we need we will begin with order 2017 89 acceptance of a training grant in the amount of two thousand five hundred and fifty dollars from the Association of Food and Drug Officials to attend the National Environmental Health Association conference funds number four or five one one I believe we are still under or we our committee was never under suspension of the rules we have a motion to We have a motion to suspend the rules from Alderman McAteer-Margolis, seconded by Alderman Inferna. ▶ 1:04:52 Thank you for being here. Would you like to tell us a little bit about this grant? This is a grant from the Association of Food and Drug Officials via the FDA. And it's specifically to send our health inspector to the National Environmental Health Association meeting which will be in beautiful downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan in July. Which I'm going to also with a similar grant that we got for Wakefield. That was in February. True. So, Coral and I will be going in July. conference actually has you know it's a little bit of everything so it's not just food it's not just housing not just rodents anything you could think about great do we have any questions second motion to recommend from Alderman

Lemmerman: MacMaster-Margola seconded by Alderman Boisselle all in favor aye any opposed that order will be recommended for passage to the full board which meets next Tuesday the 21st and the next and last item that we have on our agenda for this evening order 2017-88 acceptance of food establishment training grant in the amount of twelve thousand one hundred and fifty dollars from the Association of Food and Drug Officials fund number 4510 okay so same funding source there were a number of different categories of grants that we could apply for so this which is a separate category and, okay, I'm trying to make this, so as you know, we have a large FDA grant, the $70,000 grant for five years to kind of reevaluate and overhaul our
▶ 1:06:49 whole food protection program and we've talked about that in the past. So one of the things that we have done with our big grant is what's called a risk factor study where we hired an outside consultant to come in and they had a survey specific survey instrument where they looked at very particular things in these food operations primarily the big five high-risk issues so we did about 60 odd establishments and Melrose we input all that we hired an intern she input all the data and then we ran reports to see where which parts which factors we were most out of compliance with and the number one issue that we had was cold food not being as cold as it should be this way to explain that and that can
▶ 1:07:56 happen for a lot of different reasons sometimes it's mechanical issues and sometimes it's and mostly usually operational issues that was followed closely by hand washing issues sometimes not washing hands when you're supposed to or not washing them the way you're supposed to so this grant money allows us and so our inspectors you know have time to do their inspections but not loads of extra time to be doing a lot of training and we've tried doing some large-scale trainings where we invite you know everybody to come and talk to them but we don't really get great participation to be perfectly honest with you and nor is it as effective as going to a particular person's establishment and working with them on their issues in their operation so this
▶ 1:08:53 This grant allows us to hire an outside person to come in, set up a time with these establishments. It's not an inspection, it's not enforcement, we do it at their convenience when they have time. To sit and work with them to figure out exactly what the issues are and how can they fix those issues. So it's really an educational opportunity, it's a give and take, it's a discussion, and it's completely separate from enforcement. And then the program is, after a few years we go back and we look at our inspections to see whether those line items in the inspections have improved. And now that we're doing electronic inspections again, it's very easy. will be very easy to run those reports and look at how many are out of compliance
▶ 1:09:54 on this side of the other thing. So it's, in summary, it's targeted and it's one-on-one education with individual establishments that are having this problem. Thank you very much. And also a little bit of money to translate some educational materials into languages. Thorp a lot of the food safety information I can get in a lot of different languages. Portuguese, not so much. I guess the rest of the country doesn't have the same percentage of Brazilian population that we do. So we put some money in there so we can translate some things into Brazilian. Brazilian, did I just say that? Long day. Portuguese. and if Thorp some other languages that come up that we don't have that we can do that too great thank you very much Alderman Inferno thank you very much
