Whereas domestic violence is one of the most critical and far-reaching issues of our time, affecting individuals of every age, culture, class, gender, race, and religion. And whereas, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women between the ages of 15 and 44 every 21 days a woman is killed by domestic violence and more than 3 million children witness acts of domestic violence each year and whereas since last October nine people have died in Massachusetts as a result of domestic violence including six women and one man and two children and whereas for the past 19 years the Melrose Alliance against violence in conjunction with the police department has taken important steps to reduce domestic violence in our community through education outreach and referral services as well as programs to prevent violence such as mentoring teen dating violence and bullying prevention therefore I Robert J Dolan mayor of the city of Melrose Massachusetts and the Melrose Board of Aldermen do hereby proclaim this month of October 2014 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and recognize the accomplishments of the Melrose Alliance Against Violence on its 19th year anniversary. Domestic violence has certainly been in the limelight lately and we just hope that this increased awareness leads to a greater understanding and education and positive actions which is the mission of the Melrose Alliance Against Violence and what we've been doing for 19 years and all of you are really a part of that as well as the entire community so thank you I also want to thank you for your support of the walk and it's coming up on October Sunday October 19th at 4 o'clock at the Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School cafeteria and happens rain This year we'll be giving the annual Advocacy in Action Award to a man named Tom Santoro. Some of you might remember us talking about his program called Dear Lisa. We brought it to Melrose for many years. He created this program after his 18-year-old daughter, Lisa, was tragically killed by her ex-boyfriend. And after doing the program for 20 years, he's decided to retire from doing the program. So we thought it was really, really fitting to bring him to Melrose and honor him at this

▶ 6:03 Speaker 12: time as the proclamation said nine people have died as a result of domestic violence in our state since our last vigil last year it was ten so we have seen a trend going down and we hope that continues this year we've had family members of four of those victims reach out to us to want to come and participate in the vigil so they will be reading the names of their loved ones and lighting a candle and we just really are very pleased and feel it will add even more another layer of meaning to the event so again we invite all of you and everybody at home to join us on sunday october 19th four o'clock rain or shine and i also just want to acknowledge anna bastian who is our treasurer and joan bell who is our president and they have been extremely supportive for many years so i greatly appreciate them being here tonight and again just appreciate all of your support mr president motion to place it on file alderman inferno moves
