It is Order 2017-66, Acceptance of the Fiscal Year 17 Traffic Enforcement Grant in the amount of $7,500 from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security to Fund No. 2528. ▶ 2:30 Speaker 4: joining us my pleasure um this is an extension of the 2016 grant was a which was an extension of the 2015 grant so we've been pretty fortunate over the years to continue with this traffic grant it's $7,500 there is a no match there's three phases you see the public address announcements this past month drives over get pulled over that's what this grant is for unfortunately the grant had already started prior to us getting before the board tonight for the first phase the second phase is in May and that was going to be for seat belt safety click at her ticket and then there'll be a third phase in August into September with another drive sober get pulled over and the concept behind the drive sober and pull over is have patrol officers out in in force looking for distracted drivers drivers under the influence and obviously encompassing speeding and any other traffic violations which were all factors to contribute to OUI or operating on the

▶ 3:36 Monica C. Medeiros: chief lyle for coming today you said this uh this is part of a campaign so yes this is the funds have to be used specifically for uh the drive sober get pulled over campaign they couldn't be
▶ 3:54 Speaker 4: used for other kinds of traffic enforcement well i think some of them so if so if an officer set up radar on howard street for instance it's a favorite street for many board members and there's somebody goes by at 50 miles an hour and the officer pulls them over and then that leads to an arrest for OUI or OUI drugs, clearly that falls under the parameters of the grant.
▶ 4:15 Monica C. Medeiros: So did this just put, like, an additional officer on the—
▶ 4:19 Speaker 4: This is separate from the regular patrol assignments. We run into four-hour blocks.

▶ 4:29 Monica C. Medeiros: And so far, how long has this been going on?
▶ 4:36 Speaker 4: well it began in early december and there is a notice here from the state that funding has only been secured for the first phase and will be notified later for the next phase and when i get notified of that i'll certainly forward the information to the board through the committee and

▶ 4:56 Speaker 4: pulled over i don't have the numbers i didn't bring them with me tonight but i certainly can make sure that the board is made aware of what we've done in the past 30 days yeah that would

Medeiros: be i think sort of interesting to know and see you know i mean obviously the goal is especially with the public awareness campaign public safety is to keep people from even thinking about you know driving sober not necessarily for them to get caught but for them to not go out and do it and
▶ 5:22 Speaker 5: so we hope that the numbers are down even though you want to see i will say melrose is a safe
▶ 5:25 Speaker 4: community and it has been for a number of years we do have our challenges from time to time

▶ 5:54 Peter D. Mortimer: I'm just really happy that you were able to get this Grant Forest Chief. Safety of our community is very important. The community is getting busier in terms of traffic, more congested. And we're going to need to have the enforcement to keep it safe out there, as we've seen recently. I'm glad we can get this money through the auspices of your department, your grant writers, and you, because the people of Melrose pay a lot in state taxes. If you add up all the amount of money that people in Melrose pay in state taxes, it's nice to see some of it coming back through grants like this from the state, due to your good work. Thank you.
