Lemmerman: come forward to the podium okay before we read the resolution into the record I do have just a couple of brief remarks and would also like to invite the chief to make some remarks as well if you would like so thank you to the members of the board for allowing immediate consideration of this order so we may read the resolution with the members of the Marlowe's Police Department here with us tonight thank you to my co-sponsor Alderman McMaster for joining me on the order this year and most importantly thank you to chief Lyle and the officers who are here tonight for joining us before I read this resolution I just as I have in past years would like to give a little bit of background on police week this is the fourth year that Melrose is formally recognized police week in our city National Police Week takes place every year in May and during that time tens of thousands of police officers surviving family members and supporters gather in Washington DC and it's a time for to attend a series of events including conference workshops support groups and remembrances and communities around the country echo and amplify this important week through resolutions just like this one we know that right here in Mauro's many residents have a special connection to the spirit of police week which is why it's important that we do this here whether they work closely with law enforcement as Alderman McMaster does whether they have lost a loved one in the line of duty as I have or have a friend or a family member who serve or or our officers themselves, and make the sacrifices this job entails regularly, as these officers do. Police Week falls within the calendar week of May 15th every year, which is known as Peace Officers Memorial Day. This is a special day to pay recognition to those law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. And here in the city of Melrose, we remember three people in particular who called this city home. On September 5th, 1985, Melrose Crossing Guard Mary Foley stepped between a group of children and a speeding car. She saved the kids by pushing them out of the way but in the process was struck and killed herself. Melrose police officer Joseph Paul Martin worked with the department for 10 years. On May 31st 1969 officer Martin responded to a call that resulted in a foot chase with the two suspects. As a result of that chase officer Martin suffered a heart attack and later died leaving behind his wife and two children. Officer Garrett Swayze grew up in Melrose and graduated from from Melrose High School in 1989 in 2009 he became an officer with the University of Colorado Police Department six years later he responded to a report of an active shooter and he was shot and killed protecting his community police week is also a time to recognize the incredible duty and responsibility taken on by all police officers and the sacrifices they make to do the job we are thankful to the Melrose police for their work every day that allow us to live safely in the community like this past January when they ensured the safety of all of our middle school students after a threat or responded to break-ins downtown and for the many additional ways that they contribute to our community like the Junior Police Academy and the annual golf tournament just to name a few for all of these reasons through this resolution we hope to show our gratitude to all law enforcement officers who regularly put their safety in of their communities ahead of their own and especially to Chief Lyle and the members of the Melrose Police Department and speaking of Chief Lyle I would like to invite him to say a few words thank you you said

Lemmerman: most police department thank you I will now read the resolution a resolution recognizing National Police Week 2019 offered by alderman Jennifer L Emmerman and alderman John McMaster whereas there are approximately 900,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities across the United States including the dedicated members of the Melrose Police Department, and whereas in 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week in order to recognize the service and sacrifice of U.S. law enforcement and pay tribute to those who have lost their lives in the line of duty, and whereas 371 names of fallen heroes are being added to the National Law enforcement officers memorial this spring including 158 who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty last year and whereas among the names included on the memorial are those of Melrose police officer Joseph Martin and Melrose native University of Colorado police officer Garrett Swayze and whereas the Melrose Board of Aldermen honors the sacrifices of officer Martin officer Swayze and Melrose crossing guard Mary Foley and commends all those who risk their lives while serving the citizens of Melrose in order to protect our safety and welfare now therefore be it resolved that the Mauros Board of Aldermen formally recognizes police week in the city of Mauros and publicly salutes the men and women who have committed their lives to public safety in our community and in communities across the nation on this 20th day of May 2019 it's signed by each member of the Board of Aldermen thank
