▶ 10:58 Paul Brodeur: yes outstanding um thank you very much for the opportunity to present an outstanding candidate for the board of appeals and i also want would be remiss if i didn't thank I want to thank President Cinella and the entire board, the entire council, for that important statement at the beginning of the meeting. I certainly share your convictions and appreciate taking the time to recognize what went on, to recognize what we stand for. I think we would be remiss if we didn't remember the two Capitol Police officers that lost their lives as part of that really horrific display. And I'm proud to say that we continue to do our business. And with that, again, I offer Megan Carrier. And you tell me, Megan, apologies for saying your name incorrectly. As you can see from the materials in the packet, Ms. Carrier has an outstanding resume. She is an accomplished architect, a fairly new to her career, I suppose, in some respects, has really uh distinguished herself during that time with a number of uh projects and accolades uh achievements both professionally and academically uh that make her a terrific terrific fit she'll be starting out should you choose to approve the nomination as an associate member uh replacing krista liliths who we very much appreciate uh her service she also comes recommended by the chair of the zba reed mccardell and other former board members who know her personally and professionally and i would also direct your attention to uh the cover letter that she submitted seeking uh to be applied because it really does get at her character and motivations as you've seen from a recent experience particularly interestingly in the world of architecture we have a lot of folks um willing and eager to lend their personal professional expertise to the city and again i commend that to you because it talks about how miss carrier and her family came to melrose the um the atmosphere that they enjoyed and um her desire to give back to the community so with that uh i enthusiastically offer her nomination to you and i know that she is prepared to speak and welcomes your questions as well thank you

▶ 13:33 Speaker 1: thank you mr mayor thank you mayor broder and also thank you to the committee for my consideration uh to the zoning board um as the mayor stated i've been working around boston for about 10 years of many different our experiences many different project types from public to private sector um and then all of those projects really witnessed the importance of and also engaging with the community um and almost four years ago my family moved here uh we were in medford previously but we moved here to melrose we were drawn by the community and glowing recommendations from many different architects i was joking with the mayor that half of my previous firm i think lives in melrose uh which was fantastic um and so i just really value the melrose community it was what drew me here um and i'm just really excited the opportunity to serve to serve our city on the

▶ 14:59 Speaker 1: that you think you'd bring to this position? I love doing research personally. It's a thing I carry on in my work. It's something I do in daily life at home, just really, really researching topics that are of interest, things that are going on. I mean, projects within my house, I like to research everything and make sure I have all the information I need before acting upon it um i think that would be really helpful in terms of approaching different um items that come up to the zoning board and just really knowing the information beforehand before you know actively participating in discussion um extremely detail oriented i'm one of those people that really likes to know how things all work and how they go together again i'll do my research on this um Um, and yeah, that's I think I love research really just enthusiastic. I'm usually looking out for what's best for a client in my work. Also, you know, at home, the home front. What's best for what works best for my family in certain situations. And so I hope to bring that to the board as well. What works best for the city.

MacMaster: And 1 final question, Miss carrier, 1 of the things that you probably know, and that you're anticipating as a potential member of the board is that there are various needs sometimes needs of stakeholders that have tension. And I'm wondering how you would look to balance the needs of various stakeholders. uh most notably the stakeholders of uh you know those being developers and um uh the neighbors

▶ 16:37 Speaker 1: uh where a project may be proposed i think i don't want to use the word compromise because it sometimes gets it's misused but at the same time um you know approaching a topic understanding what what those what those real needs are of developers of the community members and really kind of understanding and and i've read a lot of books on on kind of how to get to how to get to yes i think that is one of the books that i'm getting to yes uh and understanding really kind of what what the important parts are so they're coming to solutions that will somewhat kind of appease the concerns of the community but also satisfy the needs of the developer at the same time it sounds like there's some happy medium but usually there is a way that if you're you're talking to both full sides of an issue that if you're addressing their really really big concerns there's a way to find something that will work for work for the majority of the people and the
